Preventing Toxoplasmosis Disease infection

Toxoplasmosis is considered to be the third leading cause of death attributed to food borne illness in the United States. More an 60 million men, women, and children in the U.S. carry the Toxoplasma parasite, but very few have symptoms because the immune system usually keeps the parasite from causing illness. Women newly infected with Toxoplasma during pregnancy and anyone with a compromised immune system should be aware that toxoplasmosis can have severe consequences for them. In cats infected by the disease, Toxoplasma eggs are excreted in great numbers in the cat’s feces. Cats previously exposed to the disease will usually begin shedding between three and 10 days after ingestion of infected tissue, and continue shedding for around 10 to 14 days, during which time many millions of eggs may be produced. These eggs are very resistant and may survive in the environment for well over a year. Handling the cat’s litter without proper care can cause the disease to spread.
